piccolo
The piccolo (Italian for small) is half the size of a flute and in the same key of C. The piccolo has most of the same fingerings as a standard flute, but the sound it produces is an octave higher than written. The piccolo player will most often be a flute player who also plays piccolo. Though there are a multitude of modern pieces scored with a piccolo, most players “double” on this instrument.
